The Stamped Woodcut is signed by the editor Gonin and possesses the "Stamp' for Maillol. The woodcut is in Black & White, on paper. About Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) French Artist-Sculptor, born in Banyuls-sur-mer, Roussillon. He studied painting with Alexander Cabanel at The Ecole des Beaux Arts, winning a Scholarship in 1882. About 1890 he began his career as a Sculptor; he exhibited his first works at the Paris Salon in 1886. His principle subject was a female nude, which he molded into forms of Classical serenity, reminiscent of Greek sculpture of the 5th Century BC. A sensual warmth, an amplitude of form, and a sensitive use of his various materials were marked qualities of his work. He was generally considered the counterpart in the Sculpture medium to the noted French Painter, Pierre Auguste Renoir. His work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; The Luxembourg Museum, Paris; the National Gallery, Berlin; and other Museums.
