Aristolochia elegans/littoralis is an evergreen tropical perennial vine in the Aristolochiaceae family. Its native range is from Colombia to northern Argentina. Familiar names include Elegant Dutchman's Pipe, Calico Flower, and Pelican Flower. In nature, it grows naturally at elevations of 0-3,700 feet. It likes acidic-neutral soils in the shade. It has been given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It can grow to around 10-20 feet from a woody base and stems. It can grow longer in tropical areas. The light green leaves are beautifully heart-shaped, around 3-4 inches wide with purple intricate markings. The flowers are also large heart-shaped, greenish-yellow, and they protrude from the leaf axis and resemble Sherlock Homes's pipe. The inside area of the flower is purple-brown, and the smell is not too pleasant, but a conversational plant for sure. The fruits are winged seeds from a pod hanging down and ready for harvesting once opened. It prefers to grow in light shade with average water needs. Bees, butterflies, moths, and ants are attracted to it. Zones 8-10 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly tamp down and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
