Description: Aristolochia indica is a vine/climber in the Aristolochiaceae family. Its native range is in the Indian subcontinent to the Andaman Islands. The most familiar name is Indian Birthwort. It likes to grow on rocky hillslopes and along the forest floor. A. indica is a host plant for the common birdwing butterfly, the southern birdwing, and the crimson and common rose butterflies. It can grow to around 10-20 feet long in a twining form. The leaves are 3-4 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. The flowers are cream and brown with a lip resembling a duck. The flowers tend to have a rank odor to them, and that is to attract ants to it for pollination. It prefers to grow on a trellis or pergola or anything it can climb. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
