Description: This sumptuous book is a facsimile reproduction of the 1671 original book authored by Atanasio Kircher. It is fully titled and subtitled, ARS MAGNA DE LUCIS ET UMBRAE. LIBER DECIMUS, which translates to, THE GREAT ART OF LIGHT AND SHADOW. THE TENTH BOOK. The last listing photo shows the Table of Contents, providing the organization of the book. It begins with introductory studies by several authors, version in Galician and Spanish. Next is the facsimile of the Latin edition of the tenth book. These first sections and the facsimile are in yellow pages. Then, the corresponding translations into Spanish and Galician are presented in white pages. It is a large book at 13.8" by 9.6" and weighs 5 lbs. The book is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. Black cloth boards with silver titling front board and spine. Pictorial endpapers, very solidly bound 455 pages. The only wear issue I can identify is that the white page sections (the last two translations) have light foxing on the page edges; the yellow pages do not have similar foxing. VERY NICE B&W ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE FACSIMILE EDITION OF THE 10th BOOK. An overview of Atanasio Kirchner and this work from Wikipedia: "Athanasius Kircher SJ (2 May 1602 – 27 November 1680) was a German Jesuit scholar and polymath who published around 40 major works of comparative religion, geology, and medicine. Kircher has been compared to fellow Jesuit Roger Joseph Boscovich and to Leonardo da Vinci for his vast range of interests, and has been honoured with the title "Master of a Hundred Arts". He taught for more than 40 years at the Roman College, where he set up a wunderkammer. A resurgence of interest in Kircher has occurred within the scholarly community in recent decades... ... Kircher's work in geology included studies of volcanoes and fossils. One of the first researchers to observe microbes through a microscope, Kircher was ahead of his time in proposing that the plague was caused by an infectious microorganism and in suggesting effective measures to prevent its spread. Kircher also displayed a keen interest in technology and mechanical inventions; inventions attributed to him include a magnetic clock, various automatons and the first megaphone. The invention of the magic lantern has been misattributed to Kircher, although he conducted a study of the principles involved in his Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae." BB11
