Description: W. B. ART NOUVEAU BRONZE JEWELRY CASKET This listing features an Art Nouveau* jewelry casket (also called a ring box) made by the Weidlich Brothers Manufacturing Company. W. B. Mfg. was a prominent American silverware and metal goods manufacturer established in Bridgeport, Connecticut around 1901. They were known for producing high quality silver-plated items and decorative objects. Measuring -3 1/2 inches tall by -4 inches in approximate diameter, it was cast with very heavy metal. This is gold ormolu, gold-washed bronze, or bronze mixed with other metals. It is marked underneath, ‘W. B. Mfg., 335’ with other numbers scratched in. This piece needs some TLC — the gold finish is worn, the hinge is damaged and the padded silk lining is long gone but all of this can be restored and should be. A nice little project for someone! W. B.’s use of intricate molds, and particularly fine finishes, elevated their jewelry casket designs to match the tastes of wealthier customers. Today, they are still sought out for their beauty but also for historic value, craftsmanship, and connection to the Art Nouveau style. This cherub and lily casket provides an excellent example of why. Research did not find another one exactly like it, although caskets with cherubs engraved on their lids are plentiful (not as sculpted handles).
