Coulter calls this, "a well-considered, reliable account of what an observant and intelligent Englishman saw during a three-months journey from one end of the Confederacy to the other" Coulter 175. And while Fremantle was sympathetic to the Confederacy and the enthusiasm and patriotism of soldiers and civilians, he "did not fail to record some uncomplimentary observations."
