Description: Title: Tedious Brief Tales of Granta and Gramarye Author: Ingulphus (Arthur Gray, Master of Jesus College), with illustrations by E. Joyce Shillington Scales Publisher: W Heffer and Sons Ltd, Cambridge Edition: First Edition, First Printing Date Printed: 1919 Description: An excellent example of the beautifully-produced first printing of the first edition. Original pictorial hardback in its matching original dust jacket. 9 inches by 7 inches. The dust jacket is in very pleasing condition, clean and bright with some light wear, and a small chip to the top of the spine (see pictures). The book itself is in similarly attractive condition with just the lightest hint of bumping to the corner-tips and spine-ends (see pictures). Binding sound and square. Internally clean and bright. Signature of R A Hill to front endpaper. An unusually fine example. Arthur Gray (1852-1940), served as Master of Jesus College Cambridge from 1912 until his death. Sharing the fashionable donnish predilection for the supernatural, he published two ghost stories in university journals in 1910. This inspired a Cambridge Review poem in 1911 suggesting that they were the work either of M R James or A C Benson. The 1919 Heffer edition collected all the Gray ghost stories that had appeared up to then. The pen name Ingulphus is a scholarly joke at the author's own expense, Ingulf, an eleventh century abbot, having been unfairly supposed to be the author of a fabulous, badly-written, and demonstrably inaccurate history of Crowland Abbey.
