Description: Ashanti Gold Weights. They’re not gold, but tiny works of art in metal probably created through the lost wax process. The Ashanti are gold miners and traders who range West Africa, from village to village. Because most buyers and sellers are illiterate, the Ashanti created many castings of different weights, often images of some traditional allegory. They were collected in 1970. This group features a war axe, what may be banana leaves to place food, and my favorite, crossed crocodiles, a warning against greed. The crocs share the same stomach yet fight over every morsel of food. If any piece appears incomplete it’s because a portion was broken off to adjust to the required weight. #3
