Description: Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886) Hudson River School Landscape Oil Painting Rare? For sale is a very interesting painting that came directly out of an estate in the New England area. This painting could be an important piece of history, and it is well worth researching more, so please read carefully below. I acquired this small landscape painting with a label on the back stating it was by the prominent American artist Asher Brown Durand, one of the most well known artists of the 19th century with numerous sales of his works bringing six and seven figures. The label also states it was exhibited in 1927, and on loan from the collection of Mrs. Henry Chapin of Holyoke, MA (right next to where I grew up). This painting is believed to be unsigned. I decided to do more research using AI, and I found that Asher Brown Durand was married to Mary Frank Chapin, the daughter of Israel Chapin, a prominent resident of Holyoke, so the label on the back of the painting and provenance makes sense. Most of the paintings I found sold at Christies were much larger, but the AI chat also noted that Durand did smaller paintings on board like this early in his career. The painting I have measures approximately 8" inches long by 6" inches wide, excluding the frame. One interesting painting I found was a copy of the exact painting (slight differences) I have, which was labeled as "A Gift from Mongkut, King of Siam" to a man named Dan Beach Bradley, who was the first physician to enter Thailand. Now, AI also stated there was a connection between King Mongkut, and Asher Brown Durancd, because King Mongkut commissioned Durand to make the painting to give to Bradley! I don't know how to verify this further, and I do not know why there is two paintings of this exact same landscape with slight differences. I would love to learn more and wish I had more information... but since it is unsigned, and there is no host institution listed on the exhibition label, so I don't know where it was exhibited to find out more. Since the painting was found in the Western Mass region (which is where Holyoke is located), I'm guessing it was exhibited in that area. This painting is worth doing more research on, that is for sure, but it is beyond my expertise. Maybe try and find what exhibition were happening in 1927. Hopefully an art historian can narrow it down and find out if this is indeed an American treasure by Asher Brown Durand. Frame measures approximately 12-1/4" inches long by 10-1/8" wide. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask, thanks!
