Description: Asmat Drum Artifact Hand Carved Sculpture from the Irian Jaya Region of New Guinea – Lot 32Up for sale is this Asmat Drum tribal artifact from the Irian Jaya Region of New Guinea. An hourglass form wood drum, the body is carved with bands of ‘mbisür’– a tall tree motifs in high relief and the handle is carved with stylized bands of 'was' – open clearing in the jungle or tail of cuscus and head of Hornbills on each end in high relief. There’s partial lizard skin on the top, traces of lime, red ochre and charcoal.Provenance: Private collection. Collected in the early 1970s during an expedition through the Irian Jaya Region of New Guinea and selected prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.Condition: This piece is one-of-a-kind, hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen. This artifact is in very good condition, there’s partial lizard skin on the top and it might exhibit signs of environmental exposure, insect degradation or utilitarian use, chips, natural wood splits, patina, polish from handling and repairs that are consistent with its age.
