Middleton & Co., Baltimore, Md." Mail into Virginia during the Summer of 1865 is scarce and collectible as postal routes were re-established. This is an original postal item, not a reproduction. It is an envelope that once contained a now-gone letter. Both travelled through the postal system after being brought by the sender to a Virginia post office for mailing. However, the original letter is gone. You are buying ONLY the postal portion. I do not have the original letter.ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the journey--namely: The originating town name and a cancel.
