Background To issue: This year’s Christmas stamps focus on Australian themes. The religious stamps feature the art of Leopoldine Mimovich OAM (1920–2019). Born in the Italian Tyrol, Mimovich studied in Vienna and Hallstatt, before migrating to Australia with her husband Leo aboard the migrant ship Skaugum in 1949. Over the years, she became a celebrated artist and received many honours, including an Order of the Medal of Australia (OAM) in 1985 for her service to sculpture. Her work is represented in many private collections, churches and public buildings in Australia and throughout the world, including the United Nations Art Collection in New York.
