Background To Issue: This issue features all three Australian megapodes (literally “large foot”). These remarkable birds don’t incubate their eggs with body heat. Instead, they use their powerful legs to build large mounds by scraping together soil, sand and vegetation debris, into which the eggs are laid. Incubation occurs through solar radiation and the heat generated by decaying vegetation. On hatching, the fully feathered chicks require no parental care and can fly short distances within a few hours.
