Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for an authentic early 1800's miniature plaster Grand Tour cameo intaglio carved plaque mounted in a blue velvet wood backed frame. The subject appears to be Phoenician hieroglyphs framed with a gilded bezel and mounted for display. These intaglio medallions were not kiln fired and are fairly fragile and easily damaged and were often mounted by subject matter into small shadowbox-type frames where they could be easily carried and then hung on the wall when the traveler returned home as a remembrance of their travels. Most often they consisted classical scenes with elaborately hand carved details which brought about a huge world-wide revival of interest in the Neo-Classical period. These plaster medallions were a popular souvenir for wealthy International travelers during the Grand Tour period of the 18th and 19th Century when traveling throughout Europe and specifically to Paris, Rome and Venice was at it's height. Plaque measures 3/4" high and 1 3/4" wide. Velvet mount measures 2" high and 3 3/4" wide. This nice cameo intaglio plaque is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws although there is a faint crushed line in the velvet.
