Important autograph letter handwritten by former President James Madison unsigned to current President James Monroe nominating his former Attorney General William Pinkney: “I nominate William Pinkney of Maryland to be Envoy extraordinary & Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia, with a special Mission to the King of the two Sicilies.” IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY FORMER PRESIDENT JAMES MADISON TO CURRENT PRESIDENT JAMES MONROE NOMINATING HIS FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL Ambassador Pinkney was tasked with a, “mission to negotiate a treaty to pay reparations to U.S. merchants for items lost during the reign of Joachim Murat,” during the Napoleonic Wars from 1809 to 1813 (Office of the Historian. It was the earliest establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. “I NOMINATE WILLIAM PINKNEY OF MARYLAND TO BE ENVOY EXTRAORDINARY & MINISTER PLENIPOTENTIARY TO RUSSIA, WITH A SPECIAL MISSION TO THE KING OF THE TWO SICILIES.” Contains one page with an address panel on the verso to, “The President of the United States, Washington City,” in a different hand, measures 10 by 7.75 inches, created in circa early 1817, and in very good condition with toning, foxing, and paper loss from opening the letter.
