Description: SmartStairway SS-281X Wi-Fi Automatic Stairs lighting SmartStairway SS-26LCD Controller for automatic stair lighting with LED strips. The controller is designed to work with single-color LED strips or with RGB LED strips when using the optional APS-21RGB inverter amplifier (amplifier is not included in the delivery package and is purchased separately) The light level sensor will turn off the lighting of the stairs if the overall light level is below the limit you set. The new sensor signal processing algorithm no longer causes the system to turn off after the step light starts to turn on. Now the sensor can be installed directly on the stairs. The light from the LED step lights no longer interferes. The system allows you to illuminate stairs with 4 to 26 steps. The light will sequentially and smoothly turn on from the bottom up or vice versa and turn off in the reverse order, depending on which of the sensors has worked. When entering from two sides, the light will also turn on from both sides. The controller allows you to use any LED lamps or LED strips with a supply voltage of 12 or 24 volts DC. The maximum load per step in this case should not exceed 0.4A. If you need to connect a more powerful LED strip, use the optional SmartStairway APS-21 Amplifier (amplifier sold separately). The system can work with pyroelectric or ultrasonic sensors in any combination. The new algorithm for processing ultrasonic sensors makes their use simple and convenient. Now you can easily set the sensing distance for ultrasonic sensors using the display and buttons. This makes this model desirable if you need to use ultrasonic sensors. The controller can work with pyroelectric sensors or ultrasonic rangefinders in any combination. Pyroelectric sensors are easy to install and connect, do not require additional settings. They determine the movement of objects, the temperature of which is 10 degrees or more higher than the temperature of the surrounding objects. They can detect movement up to 5 meters away. The angle of view of the sensors is approximately 45-50 degrees (for more details, see the diagram in the user manual). The sensors are not demanding on the choice of installation location and can be installed near the floor or steps. This type of sensor is preferred if your staircase allows it. Ultrasonic sensor. An ultrasonic sensor is a rangefinder that measures the distance to an obstacle. Its principle of operation is based on the emission of an ultrasonic signal, which, after being reflected from an obstacle, returns to the sensor. The controller calculates the distance to the obstacle based on the speed of sound and the signal return time. Compares it with the value that you have written into memory and if the measured distance is less - turns on the light. The maximum distance for detecting obstacles is 1.2m (47 "). The principle of operation of ultrasonic sensors has some technological disadvantages: - the sound is not reflected from the sound-absorbing surfaces. The sensor will not see soft sound-absorbing objects - the speed of sound depends on temperature and atmospheric pressure, therefore, when this parameter is changed, the distance value may slightly change. - The angle of propagation of the sound wave is approximately 45-60 degrees (see the diagram in the user manual for more details). Therefore, it is important to choose the right location for the sensor. It should not be located close to the floor or a step, as if it is close to the side surface, the sensor will measure the distance to this surface, and not to an obstacle on the stairs. Therefore, it is recommended to install the sensor at least 50 cm from the floor or step. - Ultrasonic rangefinders are high-frequency devices operating at a frequency of more than 400 kHz. Therefore, use shielded wires no longer than 10m (32 feet) to connect them. Shielded wires must be used for all types of sensors. In this case, the shield of the wire should be connected to "GND" of the power supply. This will protect the system from electromagnetic interference and inductive pickup. Since any wire is an antenna, it collects inductive interference from other electrical devices in your home. Failure to comply with this rule can lead to erroneous switching on of the system due to inductive currents in the wires. Work algorithm. The controller allows you to smoothly and consistently turn on the number of steps you need (from 4 to 26 pieces) from the first to the last and vice versa. Switching off is carried out in the reverse order with a speed of 2 times more. You yourself specify the number of steps you need and the switching speed. You can also adjust the overall brightness of all steps in the range from 20% to 100%.The controller is in standby mode. During this time, the stairs may be in standby mode. May be:- completely turn off the LEDs.- Only the first and last steps are enabled in low brightness modes. This is achieved by changing the brightness of the first and last steps according to your desire in the range from 100% to 0. If 0 is set, the first and last steps will be turned off in standby mode. Once all steps are enabled, the system will go into standby mode before shutting down. You can set the waiting time yourself. If one of the sensors is triggered during this time, the wait timer will be restarted. The light will turn off after the waiting time has elapsed since the last time the sensor was triggered. Then the light will go out in the same direction. The system will go into standby mode.. Description of the operation of the light sensor. You can activate the use of the light sensor and set the threshold for turning off the system when a certain level of light is exceeded. Adjusting the sensitivity of the light sensor is carried out by rotating the tuning resistor on the sensor. If the light level becomes lower, the controller will switch to standby mode again and start polling the sensors. The light sensor is not polled when the step light is on, i.e. the controller is in the active step switch mode. Thanks to this, the sensor can be installed directly on the stairs and the light from the steps of the stairs does not interfere with it.. System Setup. The system is configured using three mechanical buttons located on the controller body and a 2-line display. By successively pressing the "Setup" button, the settings menu item is selected, and using the "up" and "down" buttons, the setting values are changed. You can customize: - Enable or disable the use of the ambient light sensor (disabled by default). The sensitivity of the light sensor is configured on the sensor itself.- Set the number of steps in the range from 4 to 26. (The default setting is 26 steps)- Adjust the brightness of the first and last steps in standby mode in the range from 0 to 100%. When set to 0, the first and last steps will be turned off in standby mode. (Default is 10%.)- Set the speed at which the steps turn on. The turn-off speed will be 2 times faster than the turn-on speed.- Set the waiting time before the steps turn off after being fully turned on or after any of the sensors are triggered. (Default 10 seconds)- Adjust the brightness of all steps in the light on mode in the range from 20 to 100%- Set the type of sensors used. Pyroelectric or ultrasonic for top entry and bottom entry. If at least one of the sensors is installed ultrasonic, an additional setting menu item will appear in which you can set the distance for switching on. If the distance to the obstacle in front of the ultrasonic sensor is less than the specified value, the controller will turn on the light. If both sensors are installed of the pyroelectric type, the settings will be completed and this will be the last item in the settings menu.During the controller operation, you will see on the display the current value of the distance to the obstacle received from the ultrasonic sensors or the value for the pyroelectric sensors 0 - no signal or 1 - there is a high signal to turn on. This greatly simplifies setup and operation, as you clearly see what is happening at the current moment.Read the user manual for details and watch the video instructions for connecting and configuring.Frequently Asked Questions- Can I use a system with a 5V DC power supply? The system is designed to operate with a supply voltage of 8 to 25V DC. Working with power supplies and luminaires with a voltage different from the specified can cause damage or not stable operation of the system.- Can I use DC12 or DC24V charging inverter as a power source? Not. The inverter is not a stabilized power supply and is not intended to power electronic devices. The inverter has an unstable output. Please use only 12 or 24V DC voltage stabilized power supplies depending on your LED strips or luminaires.- What kind of lamps can I use?The system is designed to be used in conjunction with dimmable LED lights or LED stripes with a voltage of 12 or 24 VDC.The current of the luminaires or LED strips should not exceed 0.4A (0.5A maximum, taking into account the resistance of the wires at the point of connection to the controller) for one step.Exceeding the current will lead to system failure. So for one step, the maximum power of luminaires with a supply voltage of 12V DC is 12V * 0.4A = 4.8W;with a supply voltage of 24V DC 24V * 0.4A = 9.6W.If you want to use spotlights with powerful LEDs and a driver stabilizing the current for each fixture, then consider that such drivers do not work well with PWM modulation of the brightness of the fixtures. These drivers do not provide a smooth brightness change in 128 steps, which the controller provides and switching on comes in jumps of 5-6 steps. As a result, you will turn on the steps by blinking, and you will not succeed in achieving smoothness. It is better to use luminaires with several SMD LEDs and resistors without a power driver, which work well with PWM brightness control. For how certain lamps work with PWM, consult their seller or manufacturer.- I want to use LED stripes. What type and length can I connect to one step.Data on the possibility of using different LED stripes, see the table: LED Type (LED CHIP) Number of LEDs per 1 meter Supply voltage of LED strip Power consumption per 1 meter of LED strip (W / m) Current strength per 1 meter of LED strip Maximum allowable length of LED strip for one step SMD 3528 60 12 V DC 4.8 W/m 0.4A 1 m (3'3.37") SMD 3528 120 9.6 W/m 0.8A 0.5m (1'7.685") SMD 3528 60 24V DC 4.8 W/m 0.2A 2 m (6'6.74") SMD 3528 120 9.6 W/m 0.4A 1 m (3'3.37") SMD 5050 30 12V DC 7.2 W/m 0.6 A 60 cm (23.6") SMD 5050 60 14.4 W/m 1.2A 30 cm (11.8") SMD 5050 30 24V DC 7.2 W/m 0.3A 1.2m (47.2") SMD 5050 60 14.4 W/m 0.6A 60 cm (23.6") SMD 3014 120 12V DC 12 W/m 1A 40 cm (1'3.748") SMD 3014 240 24 W/m 2A 20 cm (7.874") SMD 3014 120 24V DC 12 W/m 0.5A 80 cm (2'7.496") SMD 3014 240 24 W/m 1A 40 cm (1'3.748") SMD 335 60 12V DC 4.8W/m 0.4A 1 m (3'3.37") SMD 335 60 24V DC 4.8W/m 0.2A 2 m (6'6.74") SMD 5630 60 12V DC 14.4 W/m 1.2A 30 cm (11.8") SMD 5630 60 24V DC 14.4 W/m 0.6A 60 cm (23.6") !!! LED stripes on SMD2835 - Not recommended for use. (The reason is that SMD2835 LEDs have a power of 0.2, 0.5, 1W for a single LED. And you can never know which LEDs are used in the LED strip. You should not believe the parameters declared by the seller, since they are usually underestimated and are given for measurements on a cold LED strip in the first seconds for red LEDs. You can find out the real current strength for such LED strips only by measuring it yourself for at least 15 minutes, since the current strength of the LEDs increases as the LEDs heat up.)If you use LED strips on metal surfaces or in metal profiles (boxes), LED strips are closed with the profile body (causing short circuits), which leads to the burning of the safety chips of the controller output channels, be sure to insulate the metal surface before gluing the LED strips. - Can I connect multi-color LED lights? The system is designed to control monochrome light sources. Management is carried out by wire "-" for each step. Multicolor luminaires usually have 4 contacts of which one “+” and three wires “-” for each color. As you can see, you can use only one wire "-" and, accordingly, the multi-color lamp will shine in only one color. Therefore, do not use multicolor LED lights.- What kind of power supply should I choose? The power supply should be selected based on the number of steps and the power of the luminaires of each step. For example, you want to use 19 steps and install 4W lamps on each step:19 steps * 4W = 76W. To the received capacity it is necessary to add 15% of the stock: 76W + 15% = 87.4W. You should choose a power supply with a power of at least 87.4W. The nearest larger of the available 90W or more. The voltage of the power source should be the same as that of your luminaires (12 or 24 VDC).- Can I use the system from the outside? The system does not have water protection (IP20) and is designed for indoor operation. The humidity in the controller or sensors "Smart Stairway" is not permissible. You must ensure that it is protected against water when used outdoors. When using LED stripes from outside the room, you must reliably protect the system and the wiring from water ingress.- I've connected everything, but I have some steps that shine less brightly than others and some do not turn on or off. What happened?I can say with certainty that during the connection you made the closure of the wires of the LED strips or used LED stripes of too high power. This caused the failure of the controller output chips. Now they should be replaced. Also, sometimes the closure occurs when the LED strips come in contact with metal steps or aluminum profiles in which LED stripes are installed. To avoid this it is necessary to check the operation of each individual step before connecting to the controller. Also, the closure can occur when wet cleaning on the stairs and water on the LED strip without moisture protection. What can also cause a system closure and system outage. If you wash the ladder, please turn off the power to the system and turn it on again only after the staircase has dried completely.- I've connected everything and everything works for me, but I have a big delay between switching on / off the last and the penultimate steps.By default, the system is supplied configured to use 26 steps. If you use fewer steps, the system still spends time turning on and off unused steps. Therefore, you see a delay. You need to configure the system for the number of steps that you use. To do this, enter the menu item No. 2 and press the "Down" button until the penultimate step is turned off. Then click the "Up" button once. In this case, all your steps will be included. Press the SETUP button until the red LED is turned on continuously. Setup is complete.- If I reduce the brightness of the stairs to less than 50%, when I turn on, I do not evenly turn on the light of the stairs. First, the LEDs begin to flicker in strobe mode and then turn on.Starting with controller version 3.10, we have added the ability to dimming all LED strip strips. Dimming is possible from 10 to 100% brightness in increments of 10%. Then, when turned on, the brightness of each degree changes smoothly with 256 increments, changing the brightness from 0 to the maximum brightness you set. So if you set the maximum brightness for example 20%, then when the light is turned on, the system will turn on each step from 0 to 20% using 256 increments, while in one increments the brightness will change by 0.078%. During which time this happens very little and is set by you as the speed of inclusion of all the steps in paragraph 4 of the menu. Usually it is no more than 0.5 seconds for one step. As you know, not all LED strips can correctly display such a small dimming step and ensure a smooth visual effect. Inexpensive LED strips, especially based on SMD5050, SMD5730 (5630), SMD3010 LEDs, have ballast resistors in their design that cannot handle such a low dimming step with these LEDs. Therefore, visually it looks like several steps of inclusion (flashes). In this case, you should not set a low brightness in item 6 of the settings menu and use its value less than 50% or use high-quality LED strips based on SMD3528 CREE or Epistar chips.- Can I turn on the system so that all the steps are turned on until I turn them off?Yes, there is such an opportunity. When you press the Up button or the Down button, the steps are turned in the direction of the pressed button and will be turned on until you press either of the two buttons again. Also you can connect a button without a latch (buttons for a door bell for example) to the inputs "Up button" and "Down button". In this case, one wire from the button should be connected to the output "+ 5V", and the second wire to the input "Up button" or "Button down".
