Description: This listing is for a rare, original, and authentic Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber B-15 flight jacket, featuring: exceptional hand-painted, full-color artwork on the back of a B-17H in-flight with tail number: 43-39503 belonging to the famous "2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron, Jungle Air Force, Snafu Snatchers" and the original, large embroidered felt chest patch with interlocking SS superimposed over a yellow, inflatable life raft and red star. This jacket is made of heavy, OD green cotton with brown fur collar (worn through at the neck); collar buttoned flap; plush wool insulated lining; two snap-closure cargo pockets on the outside and on the inside; faded red, white, and blue winged star Army Air Forces shoulder stencil; original Arnoff manufacturer's label; knit elastic cuffs and waistband (with some usage holes); fully-functional brass Conmar zipper & leather pull tab; and white stencil Army Air Forces star insignia inside. There is no UV-glow anywhere on this jacket, patch, or painting. Size: 38 The Second Emergency Rescue Squadron was credited with rescuing over 700 downed fliers during their tenure in the South Pacific from the time they arrived in July 1944 until the end of the war in August 1945. Known as the "Snafu Snatchers", this squadron was the first Army Air Force unit of its kind in the Pacific. In July 1944, it was assigned to the 5th Air Force from which it was transferred to the 13th Air Force in September 1944. "SNAFU" stood for "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up,".
