This volume printed, for the first time, 56 previously unknown letters (written in French) from famed French novelist Honore de Balzac to his chief publisher, D.H. Souverain, along with Souverain's letters to Balzac. Honoré de Balzac (1799 – 1850) was a French novelist and playwright. The novel sequence La Comédie humaine, which presents a panorama of post-Napoleonic French life, is generally viewed as his magnum opus. Owing to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature. He is renowned for his multi-faceted characters; even his lesser characters are complex, morally ambiguous and fully human. The editor of this volume, Walter Scott Hastings (1890-1962), was affiliated with Princeton University and made exceptional contributions to the study of Balzac's life and work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
