Antique Baoule ( Ivory Coast) Senufo Wood Carving Male FERTILITY FETISH 10”

Description: Two peoples have inhabited the African land called the Ivory Coast: the Baule and the Ashanti. This work, with its full, rounded figuration, flat, flipperlike hands and feet and bowler-style hat, is characteristic of the art of the Baule people. Labeled a “ Fertility Fetish,” the 10” figure is expressively sculpted of sanufo , a dark, local wood with an underlying reddish tone. The sculpture is in very good vintage condition, with the expected cracks and dings from aging and handling. (There is a chip in the hat brim which cannot be seen from the front). These objects were precious, and people very much connected with them on a personal, tactile level. Please examine the photos for a detailed depiction of condition. The figurine balances well and seems complete, although I am not any sort of an expert in African art. It has presence and character and will enhance any collection or display. Three hundred years ago the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The tale of how they broke away from the Asante has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the Asante rise to power, the Baule queen, Aura Poku, was in direct competition with the current Asante king. When the Asante prevailed, the queen led her people away to the land they now occupy. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. **140015**
