Barry Werth ~ The Antidote ~ SIGNED ~ 1st Edition / 1st Printing ~ Hardcover

Description: Marquee D'Sounde Rare and Collectible Records and Books Providing the finest available !All Books Box Shipped!See Example In Photos Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE In this timely and much praised book, Barry Werth draws upon inside reporting that spans more than two decades. He provides a groundbreaking close-up of the upstart pharmaceutical company Vertex and the ferocious but indispensable world of Big Pharma that it inhabits. In 1989, the charismatic Joshua Boger left Merck, then America’s most admired business, to found a drug company that would challenge industry giants and transform health care. Werth described the company’s tumultuous early days during the AIDS crisis in The Billion-Dollar Molecule, a celebrated classic of science and business journalism. Now he returns to tell a riveting story of Vertex’s bold endurance and eventual success. The $325 billion-a-year pharmaceutical business is America’s toughest and one of its most profitable. It’s riskier and more rigorous at just about every stage than any other business, from the towering biological uncertainties inherent in its mission to treat disease; to the 30-to-1 failure rate in bringing out a successful medicine even after a molecule clears all the hurdles to get to human testing; to the multibillion-dollar cost of ramping up a successful product; to operating in the world’s most regulated industry, matched only by nuclear power. Werth captures the full scope of Vertex’s twenty-five-year drive to deliver breakthrough medicines. At a time when America struggles to maintain its innovative edge, The Antidote is a powerful inside look at one of the most intriguing and important business stories of recent decades. <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>> Images: All of actual item listed Signed: Yes, but not Werth. Rather than adopting the "Collectors" method of describing a book, I use the publishers terms for them to provide a more accurate description. So, That said, while many books state "First Edition", this term can be confusing. A First Edition can have many printings but only the First Printing is the True First Edition. Publishers all use slightly different methods but most use a number line to define which printing, state "First Published in" with no line number or will state "First Edition" and list no line number. With only one exception the line numbers will all include a "1" for the True First Printing hence a True First Edition. Random House and it's subsidiaries use a line starting in "2" (recently they started using a "1" like other publishers) and state plainly "First Edition" if it is a first printing and eliminate the "First Edition" once they start the second printing. Many editions state First Edition, as they are until a reprint is done, but this is not the same as what collectors call a "True First Edition". A books value is in the printing and the First Printing is the most valuable and is referred to as the "True First Edition". An original Book Club issue released at the time the original First Edition is released will be described as a First Edition Book Club and later issues by book clubs will not include the First Edition designation. In my listings all True First Editions will state "First Printing" and if only stating First Edition it will indicate a later printing or re-issue in the description. ****************** EBay Book Condition Definitions Terminology Foxing: Spotting on a book, usually brown spots found in varying severity, caused by a chemical action wherein impurities in the paper oxidize FEP: Front End Paper ISBN: International Standard Book Number Crinkling: the curling of dust jacket edges over time Chipping: Little tears along edges of dust jacket Clipped/Unclipped: The MSRP has or hasn't been clipped off Remainder: The mark a publisher makes when the item is ineligable for credit back from the publisher All books are rated based on these conditions Brand New A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.
