What it will come down to is simply whether or not the cartridge, over and above its extreme accuracy, makes me feel good about my music. Read on.The Ruby 2 delivers a dense, colorful midrange tapestry with rounded clarinet and cello tones and sweet, natural violins (they can be wiry with other cartridges). Low bass foundation is clean and ample. The Ruby’s precise midbass definition gives the percussive cello/bass jabs a real pitch. A wood block bangs away center right against stamping trombones and throbbing basses in the rear row – beautifully done, full control with full emotion. The Ruby extracts more color from this complex score than the Clearaudio Insider, which tends to a slightly grayish cast in comparison. The woody Ruby 2 resembles a musical instrument rather than a lab instrument or calibration device.
