Churchill Downs, located on Central Avenue in south Louisville, Kentucky, United States, is a Thoroughbred racetrack most famous for annually hosting the Kentucky Derby. It officially opened in 1875 and was named for Samuel Churchill, whose family was prominent in Kentucky for many years. The first Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Oaks were held in the same year. The first race was composed of 15 horses and saw a crowd of 10,000 spectators. The winner, Aristides, crossed the finish line after racing 1.5 miles. It was an unexpected, but exciting turnout for the first Derby. The race is often also referred to as "The Run for the Roses," because of the blanket of roses that is draped over the winner at the finish line. The Derby has also come to be known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" or sometimes "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports," in reference to how long it takes to complete the race. On May 17th, 1875, the racetrack opened its gates and the Louisville Jockey Club sponsored the very first Kentucky Derby. A total of fifteen three-year-old Thoroughbred horses raced one and a half miles in front of a cheering crowd of approximately 10,000 spectators. The 1875 Kentucky Derby was the first running of the Kentucky Derby. The race took place on May 17, 1875. The first Kentucky Derby was a 1.5-mile race, and the traditional distance of 1.25 miles was not established until the 1896 Derby. Thirteen of the fifteen jockeys in the race, including winner Oliver Lewis, were African-American. Attendance was estimated at 10,000. The winner was Aristides, by two lengths. His jockey was Oliver Lewis, his trainer was Ansel Williamson, and his owner was H.P. McGrath. Aristides' half-brother and stablemate Chesapeake also ran in the race. Aristides's time of 2 minutes and 37.75 seconds was at the time a world record for the distance. Very good condition.
