Description: Antique Betjemann's patented "THE TANTALUS" in Tiger Oak with Plated Brass fittings and two matching Fine Cut Crystal Decanters hung with Sterling Silver Tags for whiskey and gin. In very good antique condition, working locking mechanism without the key, small chip to one decanter below rim. TANTALUS Late Victorian or Edwardian by the inventor of the lockable Tantalus, George Betjemann (1881). This two-decanter version has a plated swinging brass handle/cover, locking mechanism and decorative corner mounts. The key is missing, with the mechanism unlocked. The handle can be swung down to release the decanters by pressing down on a latch under the lock. The latch for the handle closes automatically in the upright position. The plating on top of the handle has been polished away over time leaving a smooth brass finish. See photos as part of the description of condition. Stamped above the locking mechanism is a crown logo and "BETJEMANN'S PATENT 27326 LONDON". The opposite end of the handle has a crown and "THE TANTALUS". DECANTERS The two matching decanters each hold approx. 750ml, they are finely cut in a hobnail design with clear panels, vertical and horizontal stripes, crosses, scalloped shoulders and star-cut bases. The round stoppers are cut in a facet design. One decanter has a small chip below the rim - see photos for condition. SILVER DECANTER TAGS Both decanter tags are Sterling Silver, not original to the Tantalus. They are stamped Birmingham 1937 with maker's initials "H & H" in three stamps, for Hulin & Heath.
