Description: "Blue Monday" is the fifth single by the British rock band New Order. It was released as a 12-inch single on 7 March 1983 through Factory Records and was written and produced by Gillian Gilbert, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner. The song is a eurodisco, synth-pop and alternative dance song that drew inspirations from many works of other artists. The 12-inch single was backed with a primarily instrumental version of the song entitled "The Beach" on the B-side. The single's original sleeve, created by Factory designer Peter Saville and Brett Wickens, was die-cut to resemble a 5+1⁄4-inch floppy disk and issued with a silver sleeve. The cover features no words, but instead has code, invented by Saville, in the form of colored blocks that contains the artist, song and label information. [Note: There exists a YouTube video where someone describes how they broke the color block code.] FUN FACT: It cost so much to produce that Factory Records actually lost money on each copy sold. The original single made the top 10 in many countries. It reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart and spent 38 weeks in the top 75. It spent 186 weeks on the UK Independent Singles Chart, effectively selling for four years until the release of the Substance 1987 compilation on which it was featured. The UK Indie Chart run was second only to "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division, which clocked 195 weeks (their runs overlapped). "Blue Monday" is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. In the United Kingdom, it has sold 1.16 million copies in all formats, including the 1988 and 1995 re-mixed re-releases. Sales of the original 1983 12-inch release account for the bulk of the total, at over 700,000 copies. In 2021, Rolling Stone included it at number 235 on its list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". In the 2004 edition of The Rolling Stone Album Guide called it "the ultimate in flawlessly programmed, LSD-driven, push-button dance-pop". THIS COPY is an original copy of the Factory (US) 1983 1st pressing, complete with the die-cut cover and silver inner sleeve. (See Notes, below, for further information.) Do note that this original recording is 45 RPM. The vinyl has a couple of marks, but nothing that affects playback. It is in Excellent [EX] condition. The original die-cut cover shows that it has been subject to a lot of handling and there are a couple of wrinkles and faint ring wear. However, it remains quite solid. Grading-wise, I am rating it as Very Good Plus [VG+] in the absence of any tears, writing, etc. The original silver inner sleeve is in Excellent [EX] condition, with no splitting, tears, etc. Note that as shown one of the photos, there is a faint stamped number in the upper right corner on one side. Don’t know its origin or meaning. NotesPublished by B Music 1983 A Factory Record Silver inner sleeve. Special die cut sleeve; made to resemble a floppy disc. Some copies appear translucent purple or translucent brown when held up against a strong light. These copies are the result of using high-quality virgin vinyl for some portion of the pressing.
