Description: Bonney Lake's Plateau by Winona Jacobsen, Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society The story of Bonney Lake and the plateau is not about towns and their storefronts, but of the enduring people who settled there before and after Washington achieved statehood. In spite of their brief presence, Michael Connell and Reuben Finnell are names credited for many of the areas key landmarks. In 1864, pioneer William B. Kelley arrived at the plateau. His public service as a territorial legislator and county auditor made him one of the most respected individuals of eastern Pierce County. Other pioneers, such as the Moriarty and Vandermark families, engaged in logging and farming on the plateau, which continued to be considered a wilderness. Oscar Doc Bowen, one of the settlers who arrived from the 1930s dustbowl, had a spiritual impact when he called for construction of the areas first church. Less than two decades later, Kenneth Simmons saw potential for further growth and pressed to incorporate the plateaus west end"forming the town of Bonney Lake. Review Text Title: Book Review: Images of America: Bonney Lakes Plateau Author: Neva Gerke Publisher: Bonney Lake- Sumner Patch Date: 5/31/2011 Bonney Lake is one of the youngest towns in the region, incorporated only 62 years ago. Little is known of the pre-incorporation community, which dates to the 1850s. This history is now accessible to the public and can be fully appreciated with a new book by Winona Jacobsen, a local activist and community member. You can read our interview with Jacobsen here. Images of America: Bonney Lakes Plateau went on sale on May 16. This book takes a look at the history of the Bonney Lake community through pictures, journals and family interviews beginning with the first two homesteaders in 1853. It carries readers into the turn of the century, through the incorporation and into subsequent growth of the town. As far as local history goes, the Bonney Lake area is traditionally lumped in with the regional history. Its more recent incorporation may have something to do with that, but more likely it is because other area towns always have had easier access. Buckley, Enumclaw, Sumner and Orting all have a history in logging and farming just like Bonney Lake, but these towns were each stops along the railroad. Bonney Lake, perched on top of the rugged Elhi Hill, was much more difficult to reach. Bonney Lakes Plateau gives the public the true story about the impact of the Bonney Lake community in the region. Arcadia, the books publisher, states on its website that "The story of Bonney Lake and the plateau is not about towns and their storefronts, but of the enduring people who settled there." This sentence says it all; this is a history of people and community enduring hardships and fighting to keep their foothold in the early, more rugged days. The story is told over 127 pages of thought provoking photography, historical facts and Jacobsens local anecdotes, obtained by interviewing descendents of the original families. The living history makes the book relevant for readers today. Origins of well-known landmarks such as the Kelly Farm, Lake Tapps Reservoir, the Swiss Sportsmens Club Park and Highway 410 are all explained with detailed historical pictures and concise narrative. But possibly the most appealing part of the book is the stories shared by resident families through journals and descendents of the original settlers. For example, longtime resident, Dennis Moriarty shared the history of his family and numerous photos for the book. Dennis great-grandfather, Milton T. Moriarty, first settled in the plateau in 1885 and built a large home on the shore of Kelly Lake. Although this land was in and out of the Moriarty family twice over a century, it was finally sold to the City of Bonney Lake in 2005. Part of it is now Allan Yorke Park, including the many rhododendrons planted by Denniss mother. There are at least 40 acres of the original homestead remaining, but its mostly covered in water by the Lake Tapps Reservoir. The book includes a photo, taken on July 12, 1883, of the Moriarty family and the big house on the lake. The classic western scene shows the oldest boy in the photo holding a long rifle with pride. Each woman is dressed in her finest gown and hat, while the three family dogs and several children pose. The pride on the faces of the hardworking people in this photo cannot be appreciated in words. The hard work of individuals and each family is told again and again as the history unfolds. The books format is pleasing with plain text in the captions accompanied by eye-catching photos. The bulk of the history is, in fact, shared through hundreds of images so its very accessible to readers who may hesitate to pick it up because they equate history to boring text books. Local readers will be thrilled to recognize local family names such as Moriarty, Vandermark, Tidball and Frazier. This small book, easily carried in a purse or beach bag, is a cozy reminder of our peoples heritage. The size, however, is deceiving. The work needed to collect these gems of history, record them accurately and arrange them in such a pleasing manner is nothing short of a herculean effort. Hundreds of hours of research, interviews, and digitizing of old photos all took place before the first editor had a look. Jacobsen took on this monstrous effort to show the world the rich history of Bonney Lake and its people, simply for the love of the city she lives in. All proceeds that would generally go to an author will be donated to the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society. Members of the community will read these pages for years to come as the history of a place is now recorded. Everyone who has a connection to Bonney Lake will have an interest in this book. I recommend it particularly for local residents looking for roots in their community as well as any self-proclaimed history buffs. Knowing the local history increases appreciation of that place. And the pictures of the dusty hill leading up to the plateau should instantly increase everyones love for that beautiful stretch of asphalt we all call Highway 410.
