Pottle Sterling Professor Of English, Yale University With A Preface By Christopher Morley" xxix, [1], 370 p.: Three plates; 24 cm. (9.5 inches). Black cloth spine with gilt-stamped spine title, grey paper over boards, with black-stamped circular vignette. No dust jacket. Includes Appendixes (2), Index. Map on endpapers. Deckled fore-edges. First Edition "The London Journal of 1762-63, at least in its earlier portion, is the most carefully and elaborately written of all Boswell's journals. In his later journals he sometimes has more interesting matter, and as he grew older he became himself a more interesting man, but it is doubtful whether he ever displayed greater literary skill than he does here. What usually limits him is lack of time; he simply cannot find in the interstices of his work or his play the number of hours of uninterrupted calm necessary for the full recall and vivid expression which distinguish his best journalizing. But on this London jaunt he had almost literally nothing to do except to write. His main purpose - the soliciting of the Duke of Queensberry and the Countess of Northumberland - could at most occupy only an occasional hour. He knew few people in London, and his allowance was too narrow for much entertainment. Consequently he could, and did, spend many solitary hours in his rooms elaborating his journal with painstaking care" [from page 11] [from the dust jacket], Book is in Very Good Plus Condition: complete, pages bright, clean, tight, and unmarked; spine sunned, small tear at top edge and small ding near the bottom edge.
