Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: British Railways Pre-Grouping Atlas and Gazetteer hard cover with spiral binding British Railways Pre-Grouping Atlas and Gazetteer Published by Railway Publications Ltd Both covers have bumped corners - see the photos Copyright unknown Hard Cover with spiral binding 84 Pages JUST 35 years ago many of the separate railway companies operating in Britain as self-contained units were grouped into four major systems by the provisions of the Railways Act 1921, and on the 1st January, 1923, these individual units lost their titles in the initials L.M.S.R., L.N.E.R. and S.R., only the G.W.R. keeping its identity although extending its territory by the accretion of the many small railways in Wales. Many of these lines were in fact controlled by the G.W. somewhat earlier than the date above mentioned. Similarly, the L. & Y.R. was amalgamated with the L. & N.W.R. in 1921. It can be noted here that in the sheets that follow, all these railways are shown as independent concerns as a matter of interest but the general picture presented is of the railway system of Britain as it existed in the years prior to 1923. Taking into account all the minor narrow-gauge lines, the various joint undertakings, committees, etc., there were something like 150 titles extant in the period depicted on these maps and many of these names still live. Through the 25 years of the grouped systems and even now, in Nationalization days, many of the old names not only are used by members of the railway staffs in day to day working, but such names are currently quoted in official documents, working timetables, etc. An examination of this Atlas will show that numbers of station names of the 1920's have disappeared, either due to re-naming or to the abandonment of the station through lack of passenger usage. Many branch lines were closed after the amalgamations either to passenger working (a goods and parcel service being maintained) or in their entirety. Since Nationalization much more has been done in this respect. However, some lines and stations which had in fact been closed by 1922 have been shown in this atlas for the sake of interest and as a record of their existence. In addition to the inclusion of every railway company at work in the years before 1923 much other matter has been shown. A great many junctions, many still in use as timing points in working timetables, are indicated together with physical features such as the more important viaducts, tunnels, etc., locomotive shed locations and railway workshops. Track water troughs also receive attention and in areas of tourist interest, scenic features in the railway vicinity are indicated. It is hoped that such data will add to the interest and usefulness of this volume. Many towns with complicated railway layouts have been shown as enlarged insets, and in addition, areas such as London, South Wales, The West Riding, etc., with ramified railway routes and connecting lines points receive attention in separate sheets. Interpretation of the initials of the various companies will be found in the list of abbreviations shown on pp. 49-51. Both the checking of the sheets which follow and the compilation of the gazetteer have been undertaken by Mr. U. A. Vincent and the writer is greatly indebted to him for his valued guidance and interest in unearthing obscure matters of cartographic importance and in generally keeping him " on the right lines " in the droughting of these maps.
