Between 1966 and 1972, General Motors built 1268 of these locomotives before introducing the new SD40-2. The SD40s operated throughout the US and Canada for decades, and a some still run for their second or third owners. This model has full Paragon4 sound and DCC with a GoPack for realistic, reliable sound and motor control. The Paragon4 sound system works with all Broadway Limited Rolling Thunder(TM) advanced sound systems. Other features include a smooth-running flywheel-equipped drive, road name-appropriate detailing and magnetic knuckle couplers. The EMD SD40 can be operated on all DCC systems as well as on standard DC railroads (with limited sound functionality).
