Description: MARISOL (1930-2016) Marisol is a “sculptor of modern life.” It is intriguing to note that Marisol dropped her family surname of Escobar in order to divest herself of a patrilineal identity and to "stand out from the crowd." With the honing of her woodcarving skills, she began to establish her identity in an era dominated by Abstract Expressionist painters, such as Jackson Pollock and de Kooning, and in the following decade of the sixties, Marisol found herself to be influenced by pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, despite the fact that she rarely used strictly commercial items in her works. She even appeared in two movies by Andy Warhol, “The Kiss” and “13 Most Beautiful Girls.” Marisol drifted through many movements, though her style has always been unique and diverse setting her apart from any one school of thought.
