Description: "Bust of Sylvette (I)," by Sylvette David (also known as Lydia Corbett), who once served as Picasso's model and muse. Devon, England. January 2021. Currently in possession of writer / artist Rob Couteau, whose book A BLIND MAN CRAZY FOR COLOR is illustrated with artwork commissioned from Sylvette David especially for that project. Photos of this paper sculpture are featured on pages 72-73 of that book (available on Amazon). Couteau is also the authorized dealer of Sylvette's artwork in the United States. To listen to Couteau's interview with Sylvette David go to robcouteau.com This standing paper sculpture is a reinterpretation by Sylvette of Picasso's "Bust of Sylvette”: a thirty-six-foot-high sculpture commissioned by architect I. M. Pei for the Silver Towers housing complex, in Greenwich Village. (When Pei requested a piece by Picasso, the artist responded by suggesting a “Sylvette.”) Modeled upon a two-foot-high sculpture that Picasso had made from folded sheet metal in 1954, the “Bust” was constructed by the artist’s official fabricator, the Norwegian sculptor Carl Nesjar, in 1968. Weighing sixty tons, it’s composed of concrete poured over black basalt pebbles. By sandblasting the cement surface and exposing the dark stones underneath, Nesjar re-created the effect of Picasso’s line drawing of Sylvette that was embossed upon the sheet metal maquette. Sylvette posed for Picasso in the spring of 1954, over a period of several months. Check our other listings for more of Sylvette's work. A note on Sylvette David: In 1954 in Vallauris, France, a beautiful young woman named SYLVETTE DAVID crossed paths with the century’s greatest artist, Pablo Picasso. She soon became the subject of over a hundred of Picasso’s drawings, paintings, and sculptures (one towering thirty-six-feet high). Sylvette subsequently devoted her life to painting, and in 2017 she published a memoir, I Was Sylvette, co-authored with her daughter, the sculptor Isabel Coulton.
