Description: Butterfly Wing Souvenir Compact from ‘Rio’, 2 inch diameter, unmarked, probably 1930’s-40’s, minor scuff to celluloid covering to the left of “Rio”, minor wear and corrosion to chrome plated sides, puff shows wear from use, powder cake is used with center piece missing, the mirror is in good condition, original puff is make from lamb’s wool with a flannel cover, the braided string catch was probably a loop that has come loose at one end and the flannel has come loose from the stitching, the catch is tight though it leaves a little space from full closure, the design on the bottom is engine turned spirals, the lid has a hand painted design of palm trees, water beyond a lattice fence, and a mountain with a cross at the top that is probably meant to be the Redeemer statue, the underlay is known as “Butterfly Wing” which makes an iridescent coloring going from pink to purple for the sky and water, “RIO” is written in gold in the lower rim of the design which is covered in celluloid, nice souvenir compact.
