Description: RARE & OUT-OF-PRINT! BYARD LANCASTER With ALFIE POLLITT/JIM DRAGONI/KENNY DAVIS/WEBB THOMAS/KENNY SPELLER - Worlds (Gazell 4005; USA) CD manufactured in 1993 Featuring Byard Lancaster on soprano, alto & tenor saxes & bass clarinet, Alfie Pollitt on piano, Jim Dragoni on guitar, Kenny Davis on bass, Keno Speller on conga and Webb Thomas on drums. I recall the first two times I caught Philly sax great Byard Lancaster, once with Sunny Murray's Untouchable Factor at Ali's Alley in the late seventies (completely free & scary!) and doing a solo set opening for Fred Frith at Soundscape in the early eighties. Both gigs were amazing. Mr. Lancaster also worked with Bill Laswell, Kip Hanrahan and David Eyges in the eighties. Lancaster remains under-recorded to this day and has had about ten records as a leader over his forty-plus year career. The only players here that I am previously familiar with are percussionist Keno Speller who worked with Sonny Sharrock and bassist Kenny Davis who has worked with Don Byron, Pheeroan AkLaff, Strata Institute and Hasidic New Wave. Like Mr. Lancaster, most of the musicians on this disc are based in Philly, and like another legend from Philly, John Coltrane, was a major influence on Lancaster and his collaborators. All but one of these pieces were written by Byard with one cover, "My Favorite Things" which was Coltrane's most popular gem. The main vibe I hear in this music is exuberance, the way Trane would stretch out this piece until it soared into heavenly waves. Both "Horn of Philadelphia" and "Philly Jazz II" burn at an astonishing, furious pace backed with some incredible electric bass and drums with Mr. Lancaster playing one amazing solo after another. Sam Charters' superb production is unobtrusive, clean, warm and captures the spirit with any effects or fuss. Byard's accompanied soprano sax solo on "Internal Security" my be heard to be believed. The quintet actually pull off a totally groovy reggae/jazz/rock jam on "Keno".
