Description: Original Mathew Brady CDV of Civil War Senate Chaplain Byron Sunderland. Sunderland was an avid abolitionist and was noted for fearing that Lincoln would not pass The Emancipation Proclamation. He was also known for allowing Frederick Douglass to preach from the pulpit in 1866. Sunderland was also a spiritual advisor to Lincoln during his three years as Senate Chaplain. The CDV is in excellent condition with only a small dark spot on the front of the overcoat. Brady mark on front from Washington, D.C. studio and Brady Photographic Studio imprint on reverse.
