Description: Ancient Greek | Byzantion, Thrace | AR Hemidrachm Reference: s. HGC 3.2, 1388. Date: 387-340 BCE Obverse: Forepart of bull left over dolphin; monogram in left field. ΠΥ ligature above Reverse: Decorated trident head Mint: Byzantion Size: 12.1 mm Weight: 1.81 grams A very fine, 4th century BCE silver coin from the city that would eventually become the jewel of the ancient Mediterranean (under the name Constantinople). Nice toning. Both the bull and dolphin (very small in the lower right portion of the obverse) are visible, which is relatively uncommon for this type. This city is the inspiration for 18th-19th century historians from Britain and Germany who fabricated the "Byzantine Empire" in an attempt to sever the eastern Roman Empire of late antiquity and the medieval period from its rightful Roman origin.
