Description: Original 1635 Antique Map of the Cambrai Region by Willem Blaeucities: Cambrai, Douai M-6542: “ARCHIEPISCOPATVS CAMERACENSIS…” Amsterdam: Willem J. Blaeu, c. 1635, from the first edition of the Atlas Novus. Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. Verso text: Latin. Center fold as issued.Sheet Size: 20 x 23.75 inches, Image Size: 15 x 19.5 inches This very attractive early 17th century map depicts the Cambrai Region in Northern France. The city of Cambrai, called Camaracum under the Romans, is located in the center. The town of Douai is in the upper left portion of the map (the city gives its name to the Douay-Rheims Bible first published in Douai 1609-10).Most towns, cities, forests and waterways are identified. The beautiful and elaborate title cartouches and coat-of-arms further enhance the map. Blaeu was founder of the leading 17th century Dutch cartographic firm. “The achievements of the firms of Blaeu were remarkable, & the palm for supremacy in map production in any age must be awarded to the Blaeu” (Tooley: Maps & Map-Makers, p. 33). This is an original map about 390 years old, not a reproduction. It is in nice antiquarian condition as seen in the photos. Center fold as issued. Clean and bright color. Verso (back) is Latin text. It comes with a certificate of authenticity. We have been full-time dealers in Illuminated Manuscripts, Maps, Prints and Antiquities since 1980.
