Description: Red Childs Staffordshire Miniature Dinner Service ‘SALOP’ Bisto c 1891 – 1900 Reference: Doris Lechler, ‘English Toy China,’ Figure Nos. 158,159, 164, 165, and 167, pp 59-63, 173-7. Doris Lechler illustrates several patterns in dinner services made by Bisto. The ‘SALOP’ pattern is not represented in this particular book of hers. This is a newly acquired Dinner Service from an Ohio estate. This is a child’s miniature Dinner Service transfer printed in Red. The pieces in this set are embossed with the registry mark, and they are marked on the bottom with the pattern name ‘SALOP,’ the maker’s mark, and ‘BISTO ENGLAND,’ which stands for Bishop and Stonier, c 1891 – 1900. This Dinner Service is made of semi-porcelain which has a more delicate feel than earthenware sets; as a result there is a pure white background for the Red pattern which consists of varying fruit arrangements wiith pineapple, peach, persimmon, plum, cherries, and grapes. Dimensions:(2) Large Tureens with Lids: 5.5” W x 3.25” D x 2.75” H(1) Small Tureen with Lid, Underplate, and Ladle: 4.5” W x 3.25” D x 3” H(1) Sauce Boat: 4” W x 1.75” D x 2” H The handle has been repaired.Platters: (2) 5” W x 4” D(1) 4.75” W x 3.5” D Dinner Plates: (5) 4.5” WSalad or Pudding Plates:(3) 3.75” W One plate has flaw that may be from a kiln frit and done in the making. This child’s semi-porcelain miniature dinner set is in excellent condition with exceptions detailed above; it does not have an abundance of stilt and kiln marks typical in earthenware pieces from this time period. There may be some rough areas, transfer skips, and crazing. This set was cherished and played with by children. I have described this to the best of my ability. If you are a collector of children’s china and wares, I would ask you to remember that these pieces were made for and used by children, and therefore, rarely in mint condition. A large inventory of Antique miniature and children’s porcelain and pottery dishes which includes tea, dinner, and dessert sets, and accessories exists.
