Description: This is a very rare original Mid Century Modern c.1959 SteelCase "Case" tufted sofa slash daybed with matching tufted Case chair, done in a lush mohairish cut velvet in new but vintage Knoll fabric. It appears to be the only known version with all components done in walnut. These may be all walnut prototypes by Steelcase. Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the original designers for SteelCase, and his influence, plus the influence of George Nakashima and Charles Eames (Knoll designers in the 1940s and 50s) is seen here in the walnut case daybed/sofa and chair. The Michigan-based furniture maker Steelcase has a long and distinguished history, but collectors focus on its vintage office furnishings and desk sets from the 1950s to the ’70s, when, along with such companies as Knoll or Herman Miller; the SteelCase Company helped define the aesthetics of American mid-century modernism. This real walnut wood "case" sofa and chair set were reupholstered and refinished replicating the original bolsters and cushions using Knoll upholstery fabric. These gorgeous pieces were purchased for use in a Mid Century studio loft apartment as a sofa and chair set at the same time as a walnut Nakashima coffee table for the living room, convertible as a bed for overnight guests by simply removing the bolsters. All the original cushions were replaced and the daybed is surprisingly comfortable as an actual bed: two original cushions were kept in its original 1950's leatherette if the buyer wants them. The striped vintage Mid Century Knoll cut velvet fabric is a combination of black, blue grey, yellow and brown plum colorations and contrasts wonderfully with the walnut wood. I located an extra couple of yards of this Knoll Fabric. If the buyer wants it, please let me know upon purchase. This Case sofa and chair set may be a vintage prototype for the Steelcase company. The only other version of this case sofa and chair that has been documented have steel legs cut into the walnut casing, while these pieces have solid walnut legs and feet. The chair was equipped with brass rollers to bring it up to chair height and for portability in an office or living room setting. There are also original wood inserts inside each bolster, as part of the original designer's seating specifications. I will assist in shipping and work with Plycon or other carriers but this should be blanket-wrapped for shipping by the buyer; buyer is responsible for all shipping and insurance costs. I checked freight on the eBay checkout, but it is most likely too large for cargo freight! Good luck bidding on this extremely rare, gorgeous c.1959 SteelCase Case Sofa/Daybed and matching Case Chair in all walnut with new but vintage Knoll upholstery!
