Her bonndt and a colorfulbasket of flowers rest beside her while she half reclines underneath a tree. spaniellooks on in agonized expectancy, appearing to wonder why the maid hasn’t stirred.Completing the rural scene are a part of a roughly constructed thatched roof barn, abird cage hanging from the tree, a distant water mill, and a number of sheep.Francois Boucher originally painted this sentimental masterpiece in 1750 CorMadame de Pompadour’s salon in the Chateau de Bellevue near Paris, later repeatingthe same subject in 1757 in a panel ten feet high. FRANCOIS BOUCHERBorn in Paris, 1703, FrancoisBoucher received training in paint-ing from his father. After paintingwith Lemoine for three months in1720, he began his professionalcareer, at first working as an en-graver under Pere Cars. Studyingin Rome from 1728-1731, he becamea member of the French Academy in1734, devoting himself during thisperiod to representations of Paganmyths in such subjects as VulcanPresenting Arms to Venus andToilet of Venns. In 1733 he mar-ried 17 year old Marie-JeanneBuseau, who helped him as amodel, miniature maker and en-graver.A fruitful source of income forthe artist lay in landscape sceneswith shepherds and their ladiesportrayed in various groupings.These were very popular at thetime, noble ladies of the period lov-ing to play at being shepherdesses.Boucher tried to reach the commonpeople in other paintings such asThe Breakfast and a series calledCries of Paris. As protege of Ma-dame de Pompadour, he enjoyed apatronage which not only influencedhis work but gained him commis-sions from the king and courtiers.A prodigious worker, he turned outevery conceivable type of art work.His portraits of Mme. de Pompa-dour, whose elegance of posture andfineness of dress represent a highlevel of quality in art, are of thefinest type. On May 30, 1770,Boucher died in his apartment atthe Louvre. JULES EMILE FREDERIC MASSENETSon of a pianoforte teacher whose husband invented the steelhammer, Massenet, celebrated opera writer of his day, was born inManteaux, France, May 12, 1842. Entering the Conservatoire at II,he progressed rapidly, winning the Grand Prix de Rome at 21, withthe cantata David Rizzio. Some of his supporting funds were earnedin these years playing the triangle, and as drummer at the TheatreLyrique. He met his wife Mme. Sainte-Marie through Liszt. Produc-ing his first opera Lu Grande’laute in 1867, he was recognized as afront rank composer within five years. The air Elegie was originallycontained in an unperformed opera La Coupe du Rot de Thule, andlater used as part of incidental music for Lc Conte de Lisle's dramaLes Eryanies (1873). In 1878, Massenet became Professor ofadvanced composition at the Conservatoire, and in 1899, GrandOfficier of the Legion d’Honneur. He died in Paris, August 13, 1912.His operatic masterpiece Manon (1844) is typical of his works,which were numerous and varied, including I lerodiade (opera),Marie Magdelaine (drama), Ere (mystery), orchestral suites,, chor-uses, piano pieces and songs. These are characterized by suave andvoluptuous melody appealing to the average music lover. FRANZ LISZTThe son of an amateur musician who was accountant for PrinceEsterhazy, Franz Liszt was born in Raiding, Hungary, October 22,1811. At the age of nine, he first appeared in public as a pianist, andvery quickly achieved renown as the "ninth wonder of the world."His music training was received in Vienna and Paris. After 1828,he began" to devote himself to teaching the piano. It is said that asa pianist, he has probably never been excelled. In 1840, the Emperorof Austria bestowed a patent of nobility upon Liszt. During the nexteight years, Liszt gave away a large part of his fortune derived frommusic to charity. Devoting himself to conducting court and theatreconcerts, teaching promising young pianists, popularizing Wagner,writing special articles of a musical nature, he ultimately establishedthe Bayreuth Festivals. In 1865, following a long period of affectionfor the Princess Wittgenstein, he joined the Franciscan Order, inas-much as both families were opposed to the marriage. As Abbe Lisztin the Chapel of the Vatican, he continued teaching and writingsacred music. He died in Bayreuth, Bavaria, July 31, 1886.Some of his outstanding works are the Hungarian Rhapsodies,the Legend of St. Elizabeth and Cbristns, his thirteen SymphonicPoems, the Oratorios, and the Faust and Dante Symphonies.
