Most of these books have the stamp of pioneer bookseller James Dwyer attached to the front pastedown. The books once belonged the the family of Jacob Alt, one of the first saloon-owners in Salt Lake City. Each book has a steel-engraved frontispiece, but are otherwise unillustrated.ca This set of books came from the library of Jacob Alt, one of the first saloon keepers in Salt Lake City and my wife’s great-great grandfather. Jacob Alt (1831-1905) was from New York City, but for some reason, joined a Georgia Regiment in the Confederate Army during the Civil War (7-16-1863). His parole paper dated April 3, 1865, Savannah, Georgia, states that he deserted, came within Federal lines and took the oath not to take up arms against the United States. Such “parolees” were given free transportation to their homes if within the Northern states. His parole paper states that he was of light complexion, light hair, gray eyes, 5’4”, and gunsmith by profession. Shortly after the war he moved to Utah Territory with his wife, Sarah Ann Gines Alt. He went on to have four children, the first of whom was born in 1868. He built a beautiful home in Memory Grove, just a couple of blocks from his Jacob Alt Saloon at 109 South Main Street. Family lore claims he had to evict a drunken Brigham Young from his premises and later butted heads with Mormon leadership, George Q. Cannon and others, working to shut him down. DESCRIPTION: 7 1/4 x 5 inches reprint edition hardcovers CONDITION: All but one of these books is in very good condition. Each book is bound in black and gilt embellished brown cloth, with chocolate colored endpapers and steel-plate engraved frontispieces. Each hardcover is clean and shows only light wear at the corners and spine ends. There are no names or writings in the books and the paper shows only light toning. Hinges and bindings are excellent in all books (with the one exception). Unfortunately, the book, Peveril of the Peak” has suffered from water damage. The front board was warped with the cloth and pastedown delaminated from the board. The board has been flattened and the cloth reattached, but the pastedown is wrinkled and the front hinge is started at the top.
