Description: Half a century ago, an Inuit carver followed the natural curves of a chunk of stone to create a graceful figure that's best appreciated by holding it in your hand. The natural black, Alaskan soapstone is cool to the touch and heavy. Holding this piece, it's easy to imagine a connection to the person who carved it. The tag and the sticker accompanying this carving serve to authenticate it. Since 1958, this tag has protected indigenous art from fraudulent copies, and in 2017, the wording revised from "Alaskan" to "Inuit " Art. Carving has always been an essential part of Inuit life. Carved stone, driftwood, ivory and bone tools were necessary for hunting, and figural carving was practiced for amusement and spiritual purposes. Length: 7" Weight: 1 lb.
