"Ten lengthy trips to India and Pakistan (formerly Sind, Baluchistan, and the Punjab), to Nepal, Iran, the Arab countries, and Israel, often using Burton's books as a guide, brought me to the realization that there was more to his life than had yet been covered. Over a period of eighteen years, while working and traveling abroad, I saw firsthand the sites of Burton's life. For periods I lived and worked in Bombay and Karachi (and also in Calcutta and Delhi). I visited Beirut and Baghdad, then Damascus, the city where Burton had been English consul for two years; worked briefly in Gaza, where Burton had searched for a kidnapped fellow officer; wandered through the streets of Istanbul, where Burton had sought a commission during the Crimean War; crossed the Somali desert now open to foreigners after Burton's successful exploration; and saw Uganda and Kenya, where he had searched for the source of the Nile. I spoke to yogis, Sufis, Sikhs, ranis, maharajas, shaykhs, drug addicts, mahouts, black marketeers, rickshaw wallahs, brahmins, and half-castes. I wandered up the Indus Valley ("the Unhappy Valley, Burton called it), and deep into India, a trip of some 1,800 miles, through lands very much a part of Burton's life, past Hyderabad, where he had lived in a brothel studying mysticism and gathering information for his general. I stopped at Lahore, once the Sikh capital, where the famous one-eyed Ranjit Singh had schemed for control of the same parts of West Asia as the English; crossed the no-man's-land of the border by foot under the wary, nervous eves of the troops of two nations nearly at war, to the Sikh holy city of Amritsar, where I circumambulated the Golden Temple. In Benares I witnessed the Sufi sword dances of the type in which Burton had been an active participant, and in Bombay and Baroda searched out the marriage and baptismal records in a vain attempt to find a mention of Burton's illegitimate son." -Edward Rice
