Description: Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Lothrop Publishing Company. 1898. Ninety-two illustrations in color and black and white by John Tenniel. For its age of nearly 127 years, the book is in remarkably good condition. No dust jacket. Pictorial boards have faded and show some dirt (I did not attempt to remove so as not to damage the cover) but the colors are still bright. Gold lettering and outlining of pictures remains shiny. Red spine displays heavy aging. Corners show wear and rubbing. Text block remains good, spine tight. Heavy aging to text block sides and top. Aged pencil writing almost indecipherable but "Dec 1900" is legible along with "Miss Olean Ferguson." Pages are clean and all intact. Color in color images is bright, black and white illustrations are bright. From an estate sale at an Aberdeen, MS, Victorian home. Alice in Wonderland is the classic Victorian English children's novel by Lewis Carroll, a mathematics professor at Oxford University. It details the story of a girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of anthropomorphic creatures, inaugurating an era in which writing for children aimed to "delight or entertain" rather than teach moral lessons. The artist John Tenniel provided wood-engraved illustrations for the book. Through the Looking Glass continues the story as a sequel. Collectible and charming!
