Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of. In 1871, he was sent as a goodwill ambassador to the United States and Japan. One of the more noted highlights during his visit to the U.S was a buffalo hunt. The Grand Duke, in the company of General Philip Sheridan, General Edward Ord, and Lt. Colonel (Brevet Major General) George Armstrong Custer, arrived at Fort McPherson in January 1872, by a special train provided by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. There he was met by Buffalo Bill Cody. The Duke and General Sheridan rode in an open carriage, drawn by four horses. Buffalo Bill escorted the party with five ambulances, a light wagon for luggage, three wagons of "champagne and royal spirits" and fifteen to twenty extra saddle horses. The big hunt took place on Alexei's 22nd birthday, 14 January 1872.
