SUPER-RARE Lake County View!...CEN Chase MI RPPC c.1908 PUBLIC SCHOOL Building Teachers & Students on US-10 just East of the famous old GHOST TOWN of Idlewild, a popular and historic Negro Resort Village & Baldwin in Lake County, a bit West of Reed City Osceola Co....Built in the 1880s, it was renovated in the early 1930s and became the Chase Township and Village Library! Michigan Photographer UNK. Chase was a tremendously busy Logging, Lumber, and Wood Products manufacturing community that received its Post Office in March 1872. The growing Village served as the county seat until 1874. The beginning of Chase as a community largely resulted from Charles Joiner building his sawmill, broom handle factory, and shingle mill there in 1869. Like so many logging communities, it nearly became a Michigan Ghost Town after the forests gave what they could, and the population shrank. If that were not enough already, the town caught fire April 27, 1892, causing a great blow from which it never quite recovered. About 67 structures burned down, mostly in the business district on both sides of Main Street (now U.S. 10) just west of the old PERE MARQUETTE RAILROAD DEPOT.
