In 1961 he joined the Sensational Nightingales as lead singer and remained there for 23 years, quickly establishing himself as one of the leading songwriters in black gospel music. While with the Nightingales, Johnson's song "It's Gonna Rain" remained on the Billboard charts for 100 weeks, while the album “It's Gonna Rain” sold over one million copies. In 1985, Johnson joined with brothers Darrell and Ricky Luster and formed Charles Johnson and the Revivers.
