Description: The Gayety Theatre opened in 1908 as a vaudeville and motion picture theatre, later changing over to movies only. It was located on Commercial Avenue, in the South Chicago neighborhood’s main retail district. Next door to the theater was the equally popular Gayety Soda Shop. The theatre was remodeled in 1937 to the plans of Chicago based architect Lawrence Monberg of architectural firm Monberg & Wagner. In 1957 the Gayety switched from first-run features to Spanish-language films, reflecting the change in the populace of the neighborhood from heavily Eastern European to mainly Latino. It was from then on called the "Teatro Gayety”. A fire gutted the theatre in 1982, and it was demolished not long after. The is a “Genuine Curteich” and “Aero Distributing Co., Chicago” and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. It is a historic card of long-gone facet of the neighborhood. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
