The author of the study is Johann Lorenz von Mosheim , a German Lutheran church historian. His first appearance in the field of literature was in a polemical tract against John Toland. This work is titled “Vindiciae antiquae christianorum disciplinae” and it was published in 1720. A year later a volume of “Observationes sacrae” followed it. These works secured him a call to the University of Helmstedt. There he gained the title “professor ordinarius” in 1723. The “Institutionum historiae ecclesiasticae libri IV” appeared in 1726. In the same year, he was appointed by the Duke of Brunswick abbot of Marienthal.
