John Dosson discusses his injuries to his thigh and another injury resulting in his right foot being 3 inches shorter than his left foot. 8' x 9 1/2 inches/ signed on verso On 26 July 1862, the 1st Louisiana Infantry was transferred to the 2nd Louisiana Brigade, together with the 1st Louisiana Zouave Battalion and the 2nd Louisiana, 9th Louisiana, 10th Louisiana, and 15th Louisiana Infantry Regiments.The 2nd Louisiana Brigade, led by Colonel Leroy Augustus Stafford arrived after the major fighting ended in the Battle of Cedar Mountain on 9 August. The brigade sustained losses of 4 killed and 20 wounded from artillery and skirmisher fire that evening. General Stafford was mortally wounded on May 5, 1864, at the Battle of the Wilderness in northern Virginia.A Minié ball pierced his spinal cord. He was carried to the Confederate capital city of Richmond, where he died three days later in the Spottswood Hotel. He was one of three Confederate generals killed in the Wilderness, along with John M. Jones and Micah Jenkins. Stafford left behind a wife and nine of their ten children. He was buried with military honors in Richmond in Hollywood Cemetery. Among the attendees at his funeral was Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In 1886, his remains were exhumed and reinterred on his Greenwood Plantation in Rapides Parish. Images sell!
