Description: 1870's signed State of South Carolina Bond by Union Civil War General ROBERT KINGSTON SCOTT. This document is unissued and remains in very good condition with a cross-cut cancellation on his signature. Authentic South Carolina bond signed by the notorious Reconstruction Governor who also issued bogus ones. Bond signed: "Robert K Scott" as Governor, 14¼x19. State of South Carolina 6% Bond No. 1589 with face value of $1,000. Payment stub remains attached at the left edge. Robert K. Scott (1826-1900) joined the 86th Ohio Volunteers as a major in 1861, fighting at Vicksburg (1863) and rising to command of a brigade in the Atlanta campaign of 1864. Captured shortly thereafter, he either escaped or was exchanged; accounts differ. He participated in Sherman's march to the sea, rising to the rank of Major General. After the Civil War, he ran the Freedman's Bureau in South Carolina, and became that state's Reconstruction Governor (1868-1972). High office apparently corrupted Scott. His re-election in 1870 was clouded by charges of vote fraud, and efforts were made to impeach him. In 1871, according to charges by his two successors as governor, Scott was seduced by burlesque actress Pauline Markham into issuing bogus, convertible bonds. He fled the state at the end of Reconstruction, returning to his native Ohio. There he allegedly murdered the friend of his son on Christmas Day, 1880, was acquitted in a trial held in a pool hall, and was spared by a lynch mob after he plyed them with liquor. Very Nice document suitable for framing. Please check my feedback. Thank you for looking!
