" A Brilliant Romance", "Impartial and Truthful" with just a few small illustrations Contents: - A Fool's Errand- is not strictly autobiographical, though it draws on Tourgée’s own experiences in the South. From the Publisher: "After the American Civil War, Comfort Servosse, a Yankee gentleman, decides to purchase a Southern Plantation for himself and his family. But unlike other white owners, Servosse is actually interested in the well-being of his black subjects to the extent of calling the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) a terrorist organization and blaming Theodore Roosevelt for the failure of Reconstruction of the South! Soon enough, Servosse finds himself amongst his angry white neighbors and things take a dramatic turn..." Albion Winegar Tourgée (1838-1905) was an American soldier, lawyer, writer, politician, and diplomat. Wounded in the Civil War, he relocated to North Carolina afterward, where he became involved in Reconstruction activities. He served in the constitutional convention and later in the state legislature. A pioneer civil rights activist, he founded the National Citizens' Rights Association, and founded Bennett College as a normal school for freedmen in North Carolina. Tourgée worked closely with African Americans and poor whites in the struggle to transform North Carolina’s racial and class politics. He saw the ravages of the Ku Klux Klan firsthand, worked to bring the perpetrators of Klan atrocities to justice, and fought against what he called the “counter-revolution” that destroyed Reconstruction. Known as an ally of African Americans, later in his career, Tourgée was asked to aid a committee in New Orleans to challenge segregation on railways in Louisiana, and he litigated what is known as the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). They were dismayed by the United States Supreme Court ruling that "separate but equal" public facilities were constitutional; this enabled segregation for decades. Historian Mark Elliott credits Tourgée with introducing the metaphor of "color blind justice" into legal discourse. Financial success came after his novel A Fool's Errand, by One of the Fools was published in late 1879. Based on his experiences of Reconstruction, the novel sold 200,000 copies. Its sequel, Bricks Without Straw (1880), also was a bestseller. It was unique among contemporary novels by white men about the South, as it presented events from the viewpoints of freedmen, and showed how the promises of freedom were narrowed by postwar violence and discrimination against the freedmen. Bricks Without Straw is Tourgée’s fictionalized account of how Reconstruction was sabotaged. It is a chilling picture of violence against African Americans condoned, KKK acts of terror, civil rights abrogated, constitutional amendments subverted, and electoral fraud institutionalized.
